The government switched to digital television on June 12, 2009. Get answers to your questions about what you need to do to receive a television signal.
For the last several months, FOX8-WGHP has been broadcasting two signals, one on channel 8 and one on channel 35. But on March 3, FOX8 will turn off the channel 8 signal.
This change will only affect viewers who receive FOX8's signal via an antenna. Cable and satellite subscribers will not be affected.
What you need to do
If you have been watching FOX8 on channel 8 (UHF) since the digital transition (June 2009), you need to rescan your receiver in order to make sure you pick up the channel 35 (VHF) signal. If you have a UHF/VHF antenna and you rescan before March 3, you will likely be able to pick up both signals. On March 3, one of the signals (channel 8) will disappear. On March 4, you need to rescan one more time in order to remove channel 8 from your list of channels. Channel 35 will remain and your TV will make the necessary adjustments so it will show up as channel 8.
Will we become FOX 35?
No. The FCC requires WGHP to continue to brand itself as FOX8 (Channel 8 was our original analog signal) even though we're actually broadcasting on digital channel 35.Your TV will make the conversion so WGHP will still show up as if it's channel 8.
Why is this happening?
As part of the digital conversion, FOX8 decided to change from broadcasting on channel 35 (VHF) to channel 8 (UHF). But once the switch was made, many of you found out that the signal strength of of channel 8 did not match the strength of channel 35 and it also required you to have a VHF/UHF antenna. We quickly restarted broadcasting on channel 35 and have been broadcasting two signals during a period of testing and research to determine which channel would be best.
Here's a comparison of the coverage provided by the two signals
